Sparrows Can’t Sing
| Directed by: Joan Littlewood |
| Run Time: 92 mins |
Starring: Barbara Windsor, James Booth, Roy Kinnear
Synopsis:
There’s panic in Stepney: tearaway Charlie Gooding is back from two years at sea. The trouble is that Charlie isn’t up to date with the news. He doesn’t know, for instance, that the street where he lived has been pulled to the ground since he left, and all that is left of his house is a pile of rubble in a sea of modern flats. And, he's about to find out that his wife Maggie has set up house with Bert, a local bus driver, in one of the new skyscraper blocks.
Barbara Windsor, not yet the star that Carry On would make her, shines in a BAFTA-nominated performance. With its generous location shooting, Joan Littlewoods film, released on the cusp of London's 'swinging' phase, offers a fascinating snapshot of a rapidly changing area.
